StreetSmart Swellendam has handed R45 000 to the Swellendam Bursary Fund, their Swellendam beneficiary for 2015.

The Swellendam Bursary Fund provides bursaries to promising local young people wishing to study at university or college, but who do not have the means to pay for their studies.

The StreetSmart donation is a welcome injection at a time when one oversees donor could no longer support our Bursary Fund.  The amount given comprises thirty percent of our total budget for this year, which is quite substantial. We are extremely grateful for the donation because it enables us to provide bursaries to all the students of Swellendam who merit financial support,” said Basil May, chairman of the Swellendam Bursary Fund.

The leading contributing restaurant in Swellendam over the past year, raising the most money in aid of StreetSmart, is Café Oppie Stoep.

Swellendam Handover 2014 “StreetSmart is such an easy way to quietly, without fanfare, spare a moment and think of someone who is less fortunate. Swellendam is very proud to list some of the best restaurants in the Overberg as members, but don’t just take our word for it: La Sosta, a member of StreetSmart Swellendam since its inception, has just won EatOut Best Italian Restaurant in South Africa 2015! It’s reassuring to know that the best restaurateurs also have the most generous hearts. Do the right thing - choose a StreetSmart restaurant,” said Henk Klijn, StreetSmart Swellendam chairman.

Nationally, StreetSmart South Africa has donated the grand sum of R1,04 million for 2015 to various charities working towards the upliftment of street children. In addition to the Swellendam Bursary Fund, the other beneficiaris are: Cape Town Multi Service Centre, Home from Home, Learn to Live, Ons Plek, T.L.C. Outreach Projects in Cape Town; Kusasa in Franschhoek, Home from Home in Stellenbosch, Kids Haven in Johannesburg, Masizame in Plettenberg Bay; and PEN in Pretoria.

StreetSmart Restaurateurs and their diners are taking hands to make a difference in their communities supporting organisations that are actively involved with social development and rehabilitation of street children with the ultimate goal of family re-unification. There are currently 90 restaurants that have embraced StreetSmart’s vision to make a real difference to the lives of street children. Funds are raised by adding a R5 donation to each table's bill at the participating restaurants. This donation is voluntary and diners are able to contribute more if they wish to.

StreetSmart SA is registered as a Public Benefit Organisation as well as a Non- Profit Organisation and ensures that every cent donated by diners goes towards social and educational upliftment projects for street children. StreetSmart's goal is to be part of the process of social normalisation and to encourage the public not to give money into the hands of a child as this keeps them on the streets. In essence, eating and donating at a StreetSmart restaurant is the responsible way to help a street child.
