Paarl and Wellington have become the latest towns to join StreetSmart SA, a national fundraising initiative for the upliftment of street children. The Paarl and Wellington chapter of StreetSmart was launched at a cocktail event at The Light House Boutique Suites, Courtrai, Paarl.

StreetSmart SA, is a non-profit organisation dedicated to family reunification and the upliftment of street children and has raised more than R8,6 million over the past nine years.

“We are so excited to welcome Paarl and Wellington into the family of StreetSmart towns and cities. I believe that the greater community will benefit in a substantial way as those who have, now have an opportunity to give appropriately in an easy and safe manner and the children in this area will receive much needed assistance as a result.” says Margi Biggs, founder of StreetSmart South Africa.

Participating restaurants raise funds through encouraging diners to add R5 to their table’s bill. The R5 donation is completely voluntary and diners can decline or add more if they wish.

Every cent raised in StreetSmart restaurants is dedicated to support organisations that run educational and family reunification programmes for street children within their own communities.

Pioneering the way as the first Paarl Restaurant to become StreetSmart, is Glen Carlou Restaurant, who joined this initiative way back in June 2009. At the launch Georgie Prout, Public Relations Manager at Glen Carlou Wine Estate, appealed to other Paarl and Wellington restaurants to follow suit and make a real difference to children in need in their area.

StreetSmart SA, launched by Biggs under the patronage of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu in 2005, currently has 90 participating restaurants throughout the Western Cape and Gauteng.

Nils Heckscher, Chairman of StreetSmart SA, has welcomed the prospect of a new Paarl and Wellington Chapter into the StreetSmart fold: “I am heartened and look forward to see Paarl and Wellington restaurants become StreetSmart. Sadly there are children who are either on the street or at risk to find their way there in every corner of this beautiful country. Through the money raised we can support organisations who are helping these children to find their way home to their families and/or to have a better chance at succeeding in life. I am personally grateful to all of our “StreetSmartians” who so selflessly give of their time and money to help those who will never be able to repay them.”

StreetSmart SA is a registered Public Benefit as well as a Non-Profit Organisation and ensures that every cent donated by diners goes towards social and educational upliftment projects for street children. StreetSmart’s goal is to be part of the process of social normalisation and to encourage the public not to give money into the hands of a child as this keeps them on the streets. In essence, eating and donating at a StreetSmart restaurant is the responsible way to help a street child.
